Hello! My name is Heather Love, and I’ve been coaching hockey with the Cubs and Mites teams here in Bloomington for the past five years or so. Prior to that, I coached girls hockey teams for three years in Canada. I’m writing to let you know about and exciting new opportunity for girls to play hockey together at our very own Frank Southern Arena, and I need your help!

What’s happening?

We’re starting a girls’ hockey team! Open to girls between ages 6 and 18 of ALL skill levels, the first-ever Bloomington girls’ hockey team will practice from 6:00-7:00pm on Monday evenings from January 13th – February 24th, 2014.*

With a stellar line-up of coaches and helpers ready to go, practices will focus on hockey basics (skating, puck-handling, passing, and shooting), as well as a variety of games to help players gets to know hockey and one another.

As far as costs go, these initial practices will run as Parks & Rec “Drop-in Hockey” sessions, which are $10 per player each week (payable at the rink). We will make a plan for future seasons once we have a group of players established.

Why a girls-only team?

This all-girls team will provide new leadership, athletic development, and social opportunities for girls who already play hockey, and offer a welcoming venue for girls who are interested in the game, but intimidated at the thought of joining a mostly boys’ team.

By offering girls the chance to play together, I hope that we can both entice new players to try out the sport, and encourage more of our current female players to stick with the game.

How can you help?

For this trial run to be a success, I need your help! Here’s what you can do:

1.     Spread the word! Forward this page to any and all of your friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who have daughters, or who have friends with daughters! Tell people about the team! Help us build up numbers!

2.     Sign up! If your daughter wants to join (or even just try out) the team, please email or call to let me know. I’d like to get a preliminary roster going in advance of our first practice, and I’m happy to answer questions, especially from parents and players who are new to the game. Please let me know, as well, if you're interested in helping out.

3.     Donate or loan equipment! We anticipate that players may need assistance finding equipment for these first weeks of practice. If you have unused equipment lying around that you’d be willing to loan out or donate (or if you have equipment needs!), please contact me.

Thanks in advance for your support of this exciting and important new hockey initiative! For more information, or if you have questions, please contact me either via email (halove@indiana.edu) or telephone (812 340 5962).
