Where do we play?

Bloomington Blades players under 12 register for both House Hockey (through the City of Bloomington) and travel play in the Buckeye Travel Hockey League in USA Hockey's MidAm district.

What do we practice on the ice?

The Mission of the BBYHA is “to provide a means whereby children ages 4 – 14 may play the game of ice hockey in a competitive, organized manner, under the instruction and supervision of qualified coaches; and, to aid these children to develop athletic skills, a sense of citizenship, sportsmanship, and fair play.”

The BBYHA’s Vision is “to provide a positive youth hockey experience for players of all skill levels and ages, to help our children develop as players and individuals, and to foster a life-long enjoyment of the game of hockey.”

American Development Model

The BBYHA endorses the USA Hockey American Development Model. The ADM provides age-appropriate guidelines that are intended to help our children enjoy hockey and develop their skills in a way that is appropriate for their stage of development. For more information on the American Development Model, visit our ADM information page.

HOUSE HOCKEY

What's the difference between house hockey and travel hockey?

House Hockey is a local-play league with 2 practices or 1 practice and 1 scrimmage per week, while being integrated with the travel team and coaches by Blades coaches. House players do not play competitive hockey games if they are not also part of the BBYHA. Blades players ages 12 and under all play House Hockey, which is designed to allow hockey players of all levels gain experience practicing with experienced hockey players of their same age. Practices and home games take place at the Frank Southern Ice Arena.

I'm not sure which to choose!

We've got you covered. Have a look at our House Hockey Page for more information on House vs Travel comparisons.

How do I register?

The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department manages registration at https://bloomington.in.gov/recreation/programs/12162

Equipment Rental

The BBYHA operates an equipment rental program for House Hockey players. You can equip your player with a full set of gear for the season at a fraction of the cost of buying it yourself.

If you need rental gear, we'll offer two in-person dates at the Frank Southern Arena to try on equipment and get fitting advice:

  • October 6, from 6-8 pm
  • October 16 from 4-8 pm (please come at least an hour before your official house hockey ice time starts)

Please fill out our BBYHA Youth Hockey Equipment Rental Request in advance. We will send you a payment form after we confirm that we have all of the gear you request in this form. NOTE: we have a limited supply of helmets.

For other information on equipment rental, please contact equipment@bloomingtonblades.com
